1. Henry McQuillen 1890 married Annie Paton Belford Dec 1931. Could he have been married previously? . Their only child was Henry McQuillen born Alnwick Sep 1933 - still living in 2016 - he has a daughter, living in the south of England and apparently spends a lot of time with her . Jim made contact with this Henry/Harry via the editor of the Ambler in late August 2019 - Watch this space!

1914/5. Joined up with the 7th Cameron Highlanders S/17137 - no service record seems to have survived . Went to France 3/101915. Received the 1914/15 Star, Victory & British War Medals . Transferred to class Z Reserves on 20/3/1919 . Pat , Jen - does his son Harry still have his medals??

By the way the two spellings of our surname seem
to be interchangeable! Amble always seems to be
able to muddle along.I like the place and  I ntend to

Henry 1(born 1827 ) came to Lesbury Northumberland
 to work on the railway bridge .Henry 2,my grandfather
became a farrier (blacksmith)He was born in 1863. My Dad
Henry3 was born in1889. I'm the 4th Henry born 1933
I'm a very Hale and Hearty 86 year old

2. Thomas Finlay McQuillen Alnwick Mar 12/2/1893- 1979.. Thomas Finlay McQuillen was baptised 13/3/1893 in Amble to Henry & Margaret Isabella.

1914. He, a miner, enlisted as a private on 17/10/1914. Father Henry McQuillen, 51 Gordon Street Amble . Joined at Denham 6/11/1914. He had a fair complexion, brown eyes & hair. Was 5ft 7", weighed 137 lbs. Was wounded in the arm on 19/7/1916, in hospital 43 days, wounds healed & no disability.Became a Lance Cpl on 8/3/1916 and a Corporal on 7/5/1917 . By 1919 Thomas F McQuillen, was a Sergeant, service number C1004, in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps. Apprx. 20 damaged pages on his service on FMP. Served for 4 yrs 106 days . Awarded the 1914/15 Star, Victory & British War Medals. On 10/3/1920 he acknowledged his Star Medal from 51 Gordon Street. But, by February 1921 when he received his British War medal , he seemd to be living : ..ng Row South, Radcliffe, Acklington . And in September 1921 he applied for his Victory Medal

1920. Thomas F McQuillan married Alice Henderson Alnwick Jun 1920 . He died, stated age 86, Amble 1979 & had 4 children in Alnwick: Ellen H McQuillen 1921, Henry McQuillen Alnwick Sep 5/8/1923- 2002 Jun North C , Edward H McQuillen Alnwick Sep 9/7/1929 - 2015 & Thomas F McQuillen 1933-34

Ellen H McQuillen ( Aunt Nelly to Alastair) 1921 married Alfred T Robinson North N 2nd Dec 1944 . She had children: Anthony T Robinson 1945, Penelope G Robinson 1947 & Linda A Robinson 1953. Alfred T Robinson 1920-2009 . Pat played with a Penelope as a child . Linda had a daughter Helen- she the owner of the McMahon tree

Henry McQuillen 1923 married Joan Whittle North N 2nd Jun 1956. They had Alastair J McQuillen North N 2nd Dec 1959 - in contact with him 2/9/2019

"Back in the 1970-80’s my parents Henry McQuillen (Harry) and Joan (Whittle) did a lot of research into the family tree and what they found by scouring old parish records is still at my mothers so I’ll need to dig them out."

Edward H McQuillen ( Ned)1929 married Liz Wilson from Warkworth about 1976: he passed away a few years ago-2015- in Warkworth. Two Sons, Andrew and James.

1939 Register. I cannot find Thomas Finlay McQuillen nor his wife Alice in this - have searched exhaustively!, even outside Northumberland

"Not sure why no record could be found for Thomas Finlay McQuillen in the 1939 records, however I do know that he was working as a bricklayer in London during the Blitz. My Father, Henry (1923-2002) had left school to help the family out financially at about this time."

- 22/3/2016- Contacted a Helen Foan who has a McMahon Ancestry tree with T F Mcquillen as a direct ancestor: Alfred T Robinson & Ellen H McQuillen as grandparents, Linda Robinson 1953 as mother - Looked at this again & sent another message on 3/4/2016 . Helen lives down in Bath so not in regular contact and also has a elder sister Jenny living in Australia.

 

3. Alice Maud M McQuillen Alnwick Dec 1896- 1985 . Born 18/3/1896 according to FMP 1939 Register, but Nov 1896 according to her Tyneside May1985 d.c., she given then as aged 88. Also Bmd imlies a birth in the Dec quarter. . Alice M M McQuillan married Richard Lawson Alnwick Jun 1919 .His parents John Lawson & Sarah: living 21, Dandesfield Place, Radcliffe in 1911C- Richard, 15,a hairdresser's apprentice. She had children Margaret I Lawson Alnwick Dec 1919 & John Lawson Alnwick Sep 1922. John Lawson had Jennifer Anne 1952, Geoffrey Richard 1946 and Graham 1955. Diamond Jubillee of Alice & Richard Lawson 1979

Richard Lawson never spoke of WW1 to his grandchildren . He could have been a private in the Northumberland Fusiliers, reg. number 11917: medal card exists on Ancestry, but no details to confirm it is definitely he. This Richard Lawson saw service in France, joined up before 9/9/1915 and got the British Star, Victory & British medals - would his son not have kept these on his death Jen??. He knew Alice by 1914- both 18 then- and I feel they would have married earlier than 1919 had he not been in the war. No service record- with personal details - seem to have survived: no pension record : lots of these records were destroyed by bombing in 1940 . Richard Lawson died Tyne & Wear Dec 1981

1939. Alice M M Lawson, stewardess, given as widowed- but her husband also there given as married!! - is living 7 Joan Street, Newcastle upon Tyne with Richard Lawson, b. 12/12/4/1896, steward, Margaret Isabella Lawson, b. 2/11/1919- transcribed as March 99!!- , single- but also has Moffat & Heron over her name??- barmaid- she later married Heron - and one other, record closed, presumably John Lawson 1922

Pat knows that much later the Lawsons were running the Royal Navy Social Club in Newcastle . Also the story that when Margaret I Lawson married, the marriage only lasted a week!!

She spoke a lot of her family and background, however we have been fascinated to read the information on your website, especially the earlier the stuff. You have obviously carried out a significant amount of research and really appreciate being able to access the outcomes of this. 

Your main focus seems to have been on William, but I wondered if you might like me to share some facts about my grandparents. I can remember visiting Annie (my dad's cousin- Pat's mother ) when they lived in Lynemouth and had the shop but unfortunately don't  have contact with Pat and her family." - Jen Crowder

Jen has sent a photograph of Margaret Isabella and a copy of her teaching record when she was a pupil teacher- many thanks!. My brother had these passed on to him from our grandmother, A M M McQuillen, they were in a writing case belonging to her parents. Geoff still has the writing case. The document refers to Longhoughton School

John Lawson  (known as Jack).

▪born 12/6/1922 at 51 Gordon Street Amble to Alice Maud Mary and father Richard Lawson. He had an older sister Margaret Isabella Lawson(known as Peggy)
▪lived in Amble as a youngster (my understanding is that my grandmother- Alice Maud Mary 1896 - looked after the family as their mother died so young, in 1911. ).
▪moved to Lynemouth (Dalton Avenue) where he went to the local school and my grandfather- Henry McQuillen 1863, worked in the pit. They lived near to my grandmother's brother (Pat's mum, Annie and my father were more or less the same age. Dad kept contact with Annie, he talked about her a lot, as I think they were partners in crime as youngsters).
▪not sure how long the family lived in Lynemouth,  but my grandmother was asthmatic so moved away from the pit to Newcastle, where they ran South Benwell Social Club. They were there during the war, which can't have been easy, as it was a stones throw from Vickers Armstrong munitions factory on the River Tyne.
▪By then Jack worked in the shipyards, which was a protected occupation. 
.▪Jack married Annie Thompson,  22nd February 1944 at St James and St Basil's church Fenham Newcastle.
▪They had 3 children Geoffrey Richard (1946 - same age as Pat) Jennifer Anne 1952 (me) and Graham 1955.
▪Grandparents both lived well into their eighties
▪my father, John Lawson, died in 2005 having had a very successful career as a commissioning engineer. He travelled all over the world with his job and was a fantastic role model to us all.

My father and his sister- Margaret Isabella/Peggy Lawson 1919 - parted company after my grandmother Alice died - this1985 : as a consequence, we have no documentation e.g. birth certificates. Peggy died about four years ago and although we had not been in contact with her, we were kept up to date from time to time by Harry McQuillen  (the same Harry that Pat has tried to contact). He is the missing link, as I think he will have significant documentation and has also lived in Amble most of his life so had contact with the other cousins. Harry is still alive and living at the same address.

 

"a tea service which had an inscription, I can't remember the date, given to Margaret Isabella Finley on leaving Lesbury School which I am assuming was when she got married: this 1889, she was a pupil teacher in 1881C . it looks as if she went from Longhoughton to Lesbury as her career progressed (they are two villages relatively close to each other),

5. Isabella Evelyn McQuillen Alnwick Mar 19/1/1903 - 1977. Known as Eva, Pat thinks she married Rowley and had no children-

1939 Register: James & Evelyne Rowell, he a master butcher, are living 4 Dilston Terrace, Amble - he born 1892

James( Jim) Rowell died in the 1950’s. He was awarded a gallantry medal for rescuing the upper gunner of a stricken Stirling Bomber when it crashed into the Robson Families’ farmhouse about a mile to the west of Amble. Tragically all four of the Robson Children and the bomber crew died except for Sgt Hook.

My grandmother, Alice M M McQuillen 1896, was very close to her sister Eva.  Eva's husband Jim Rowell, apart from being the butcher in Amble, was quite famous. During the second world war, Jim rescued a pilot whose plane had crashed into a farmhouse on the outskirts of Amble. Sadly the children were asleep upstairs, and were all killed that foggy night (there is some information about this on the Internet - newspaper reports and plane logs)

Isabella Evelyne Rowell, aged 74, died Oslo, Norway 30/10/1977: .she spent her summers in Norway as a guest of a then a young Norwegian Hotelier family, who she befriended on a cruise to the Fjords in the 1950’s. She worked in the Hotel Shop and acted as Nanny to their family. The Hotel became one of the largest in Norway and was visited by the Norwegian Royal family.  

?? Does Pat recognise any of these names - the children would have been 1st cousins to her mother . Yes, she recognised Ellen's daughter, Penelope Robinson
